Wireless Atheros ar5211 chipset not recognized by Fedora or KnoppixSTD
 

I am newbee so need help

I am trying to go wireless using my Toshiba machine that has the following Wireless Card:
The laptop is dual boot with Windows XP and Fedora Core Distribution.

Atheros AR5001X+ Wireless Network Adapter (embedded IEEE802.11a/g, g Wireless LAN) based on the Atheros ar5211 chipset.

No wireless interfaces are found and when I go through the Netrwok Configuration, it does not list my card or the driver there

and if I do a sbin/ifconfig wlan
wlan: error fetching interface information: Device not found


If it is compatible, how can i configure it to use it and if it is not, are there drivers out there and is installing the drivers pretty much the same as in Windows.

If it is not compatible,I have a PCMCIA Slot...What card should I get for that?

I am a new bee, hence the kiddish questions.
Please help.

P.S. Also the wireless card is recognized fine in Windows XP

I'm having the same issue with a Broadcom wireless interface in an emachines laptop.

A friend of mine suggested that you can get a 802.11B card with the Intersil chipset for probably $20 that should work with Linux.

Another approach that I have been looking into is ndis for Linux. Take a look at:
http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/
and
http://www.linuxant.com/driverloader/

The only problem is that you will not be able to compile these in Knoppix if the kernel source is not included on the disk (I don't know, I'm a newbie myself).

If you get something to work please post it.

so the $ 20 card, is that a PCMCIA Card ?

Could you give me the exact specs.. I would rather use that.

WARNING: I do not know this for sure!

From what I understand it is the chipset and not the "brand" that is important when it comes to support of these interfaces in Linux.

Since my friend (Red Hat certified engineer) simply suggested the Intersil chipset I am guessing that this card, or any like it, has a high probability of working under Linux:

I don't know if you're in the US or not.
But that is ordering through the Internet and that would take a while.
Do you know of nay PCMCIA Cards that will work in Linux that are readily available in stores(electronic) like Best Buy and stuff?

The only ones I see at stores are Linksys, Netgear, D-Link stuff.
Are any of those compatible? If yes, could you let me know the specifics.

I'll try and find out the compatability of that card in another thread.
