Wireless Access to Internet...in LAN OK, outside not working....going nuts!

Hi Guys,

I am as frustrated as ever....I can't seem to figure it out!..

I have a wireless access point in my house. I have run windows comps off it and works fine...It is just an AP and the router is the dhcp server........

I have installed openSUSE 10 on my IBM R40 Laptop.

I CANNOT CONNECT TO INTERNET!

I can connect in the lan to the internal webserver (with ip address)...I can connect to both the AP and Router web based console!....so technically I am connected but cannot get on the other side of the router (internet)......thought for some reason it could be dns, so i tried a couple internet sites with ip address and not working!...

SUSE automatically recognised my wifi card as Actiontec Electronics Prism 2.5 Wavelan chipset .

I am just out of ideas....

ps...i thought maybe firewall, turned that off...still no luck..

once again, i have layer 3 and layer 4 access internally, just no damn access outside of the lan...checked my router, everything is open on that!

please help!

My only thought is what is your gateway set to? your gateway should be set to your router's IP address.

It really does sound like your routing is not configured. I have had this problem where ip and netmask set up with DHCP, but not routing and DNS.

Try opening a terminal, change to the root user by typing "su -" then your password, then type:

route add default gw <router_ip>

You should also be able to manually configure the default route (and DNS servers) through YAST Networking.

thanks for the info....

so you are saying i should add the default gateway of the router?....the default route i added in yast was that of the Wireless Access Point!....remember it is LAPTOP -> WAP -> ROUTER
LAPTOP(dhcp) -> WAP(static address of 192.168.0.200) -> ROUTER (static 192.168.0.1)

and with the DNS server, i didn't know what to do as my DNS servers are external, so i added them and it didn't work...as I said, it won't look outside of the router!...so do i continue with the DNS servers i.p address?

thanks very much for your assistance.

funny thing is that i just installed xandros and all is fine...it seems to have configured the dns server itself...

i'll re-install suse again and try the things suggested. thanks very much.
