Wifi only works when another USB is connected

I'm not sure what's going on but I updated my Ubuntu distro from 16.10 to 17.04, and now my wifi doesn't work until I tried hooking up my Xbox 360 controller in. I tried to revert back to the old kernel by purging the new one but it didn't work.

My dmesg output is attached if that helps!

is dist-upgrading between non-LTS versions even supported?

also, is this a usb wifi? and the xbox controller? is it usb?

also, thanks for posting 800+ lines of dmesg output without even the slightest hint what to look for. you really do think we're gods, don't you.

USB Wifi (D-Link Wireless N DWA-130 Network Adapter - USB 2.0 - 802.11b/g/n)
Yeah the controller is USB too

I don't know what to look for in dmesg, nor had a clue what to do with it. I just had a clue that I got from reading another forum. I'll try using a USB drive.

Are you sure that it isn't just that it's taking a long time for the network adaptor to be brought online? The last parts of dmesg seem to suggest that the wireless isn't ready for a while for some reason.

i had a hunch that maybe the system thinks that the controller is actually the wifi device.

have you rebooted since dist-upgrading?

did the dist-upgrade show up any other errors, anything unusual?
how did you do it?

why do you think the problem could have something to do with kernel versions?

what's that got to do with anything?

...

please post the output requested here, except instead of the lspci line you can simply post the output of
Code:

lsusb

Yeah somehow it takes a long time to connect so I'm not sure if USB has anything to do with it.

I'm not experienced in troubleshooting but it was an easy attempt of guessing :)

Thank you for the time. The attached file is here but 'rfkill list produced no output.

Well, I did it through a GUI that tells you there was a new non-LTS upgrade available, so I did it through there.

I'm not sure where I would see these errors when I upgraded to 17.04. With the exception of the wifi problem, it booted up just fine. However, every time entered'apt-get update', it went through only four sources (I'm not sure what they're called) and I'm certain there was more whenever I did.

Anyway, I have two front USB ports and every time I put it in the left one (where I always had it), it doesn't pick it up. However, if I put it on the one to the right, It'll connect but takes five minutes for it to do so.

I know this might piss off some of you who are helping me but I did what the original instructions (without lsusb) told me to do, and it produced like 700+ lines of identical warnings.

Is it possible to and should I make a new thread with a different title after figuring out what's wrong? The problem could be different when it's solved.

ondoho 05-09-2017 01:12 AM

looking at your demsg output, i'm currently seeing something almost identical in this thread and i'm sure some web searches would turn up a few more - possibly with solutions.
