wifi keeps disconnecting when the computer is idle

OK, i'm a newbie here, and i've looked around for anything concerning my problem but still haven't found much...... so sorry if i seem a little naive

anyway.. i'm running opensuse 10.2 with a wifi connection to my router and so my LAN and the internet. i've managed to configure it with the drivers that came with the distro, and ive secured it all - so its all working fine, i can browse the internet etc. This is until i leave my computer idle for a while..... i come back and its disconnected. i'm thinking its a power saving problem because i can be browsing for hours and have no problems..... but when i leave it for a little while it stops...and i have to restart the computer to get it working again even when i have disabled power saving in the config file i'm still having a problem

sorry if this is a little patchy, id give you some more details but i don't
really know what i'm looking for... so id be happy to give you any other
information that may be useful

help from anyone would be really appreciated.. thanks!

Hmmm,
I'm just thinking out loud and this may not have anything to do with your problem..
Did the same computer running another operating system work wifi correctly? This would be a hint if it's SuSe specific.
Can this be a BIOS problem reducing power to the wifi adapter thus causing a loss of connection..I think most modern Bios configurations
can control the amount of power savings in standby..Worth investigating at least..
Thats about all I can think of perhaps someone has more specific answers..
Goodluck,
jolphil

Hi, thanks for the reply,

I've just found out that if i use networkmanager it stays connected, but i need to use ifup so i can have both my eth0 and wlan0 running at the same time. This now makes me think it was never a power problem but instead something wrong with ifup... any suggestions?

thanks,
