Wicd package conflict?
 

Hi everyone,
I had wireless working for awhile on an IBM Thinkpad Z60m running Slackware 14.1 and it has stopped working possibly due to my messing up a setting somewhere while playing around.
My question is do I have a conflict with 2 Wicd packages installed?
I ran the following command;

bash-4.2# slackpkg search wicd <CR>
[ installed ] - wicd-kde-o.3.o_bcf27d8-i486-1
[ installed ] - wicd-1.7.2.4-i486-4
bash-4.2#

Also when I set the wicd daemon I lose my land line internet connection & I'm thinking maybe its due to 2 wicd packages running. My primary Window manager is jwm but I have KDE setup as guest for its network manager to setup wicd.

I would remove the KDE thingee because you don't need it. wicd has a ncurses interface which you can run from the command line with the command wicd-curses.

I can't say for sure whether you have a conflict, but simplifying your setup will be a start to troubleshooting this.

Afterthought:

There is also a GUI interface for wicd called wicd-client. wicd provides all you need for an interface.

I removed the KDE wicd package as you suggested. To simplify the trouble shooting process would you recommend that I remove the Network Manager package since I have no intentions of using KDE? I just wan't to eliminate any chance of running around in circles while setting up the network again.

If you have two network manager programs, only one will actually manage your network. I have run into this with Gnome network manager and wicd.

I would suggest removing the one you don't plan on using. I would keep the KDE base, in case you wish, at some time or another, to use a KDE application, such as, just to pick one, Okular. I don't use the KDE desktop, but I use a lot of KDE applications.

If, after the removal, you have trouble connecting, test with a wired connection just to make sure the issue is with the wireless.

It took me a while but after making the networkmanager non executable and setting up just the wicd daemon and clearing the traditional Slackware networking files I finally got everything working with no conflicts.
