Well after a brief search on google, I think it may stand for "Port Authentication Entity Daemon". It's apparently developed by GlobespanVirata (who seem to be developing/selling integrated circuits for wlan devices) and is used to control WPA/802.1x functions. It's closed source by the way.
I hope that helps a little.
