vpn + wireless
 

Hi,

I am trying to connect to a wireless network. Unfortunately the access is through a VPN. Now the I have the ip address of the destination network ie the vpn(I assume in this case this becomes the gateway) but how exactly would one set this up. Unfortunately there is no support for linux from the ISP or helpdesk side.

I have the windows driver working with ndiswrapper. I get the wlan0 interface. iwlist wlan0 scanning shows the list of newwork available. I tried wlan-config and it does say connected to the specified ESSID. I see the driver load up during boot.

Any help on how to connect to the vpn using the wireless interface would be appreciated.

What is the VPN environment? - the endpoint, the client.

I use a Linux version of Cisco's VPN client over wireless for access to a corporate network with no problems, for example.

Frankly I didn't understand the question. Are you asking the endpoint hardware ? I have the endpoint IP etc, but I am not sure on the hardware. I can get an IP once I run wlan-config, can ping the endpoint vpn IP but still am not sure how to connect through or to the vpn

The hardware at the endpoint determines the requirements on the client end. What I was trying to figure out is what software you were using to connect to the endpoint and what type of endpoint that was.

Do you know all of the port & protocol requirements as well as the passwords? i.e., is the connection UDP over port 10000, TCP/IP, etc.? Are you using certificates, a pre-configured profile, or ...?

On windows I use Contivity VPN client. Its preconfigured here in the university. It uses some kind of group security authentication option. I know nortel provides a linux version but its not free and university tech support here are not aware of setting this up on linux.

And yes I have all the passwords and stuff, not sure if 802.11x comes as a protocol (are you asking about the vpn protocol ? if so I am not sure about this, I can try and find that out if required)

I suspect that you are going to be stuck with the Nortel s/w. Check their site for support and eval versions.

As for the protocol question, it was related to the transport for the VPN. It's one of the things you need to know to get it set up.
