Very slow wireless internet connection using ubuntu 8.04, 8.10, 9.04

Hi,

I've been running ubuntu 7.10 since it came out and wireless internet has been a solid 800k/s. I've tried the three new versions of ubuntu on another partition on the same computer and each time, the download speed is only 25k/s.

The card is a rt2500.

Can anyone point me how to resolve this issue?
Thanks

try to disable ipv6

Code:
sudo vi /etc/modprobe.d/aliases
Find the line:
Code:
alias net-pf-10 ipv6
change to
Code:
alias net-pf-10 off

Save the file and reboot

To disable ipv6 in firefox
type in the address bar:
Code:
about: config
In the filter, type:
Code:
ipv6
You will see the variable
Code:
network.dns.disableIPv6
Change value to true to disable IPv6 support in Firefox.

Hi,

I tried to edit /etc/modprobe.d/aliases in my installation of ubuntu 9.04. Unfortunately, that file doesn't exist.

I changed the line in firefox to disable ipv6, but that had no effect.

BTW, I verified my installation of ubuntu 7.10 and the line "alias net-pf-10 ipv6" already exists in /etc/modprobe.d/aliases. In firefox, disabling ipv6 is false.

Thanks for the suggestion.

You are right, in your version it is build into the kernel.

Take a look at

I resolved the issue.

I googled for "linux diagnosing slow internet speed"

The first hit was about a similar thread.

Later on, a link was provided where many people were discussing an issue in /etc/nsswitch.conf.

The consenus was that a general fix can be made as follows:

Change this line:

hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4

to the following:

hosts: files dns

This worked for me.
My internet speed is back to normal.

Thanks to everyone for their help.
