You don't tell us what version of Mint, or what the brand/model of your USB modem is, or how you're connecting to it the first time.
Typically, such wireless dongles are seen as storage devices first, and need to be 'flipped' to communications mode to function. Since it works the first time, chances are your logout is putting the device back into storage mode. Removing the device by unplugging it MAY reset it. You should also install the usb_modeswitch program, which performs the 'flip', which may be all you need. It should be in your online repositories.
Have you checked which linux distro the usb modem supports.
Since the OP said it DOES work on their Mint installation, it OBVIOUSLY is supported for their use.

Most usb modems can be mounted as iso9660 filesystem. They have help files, drivers etc. Check them out.
Which is POINTLESS, since they're the drivers for WINDOWS and MAC systems. Questions about USB wireless dongles have been asked and answered on here MANY times, and none of them ever reference the built-in storage for a reason.
