Ubuntu + wireless--it just works

I was struggling to get Linux working on my Compaq nc8000 laptop. First, MEPIS 6 and then Vector 5.1 Vector came closest, but never worked.

Web searches showed that people had succeeded with Debian so--on a hunch--I installed Ubuntu 6.0.6. It WORKED--right out of the box.

Curious why MEPIS--now based on Ubuntu--did not work.

Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG
Security == WEP
Modules? I don't know.---What should I look for?

The key thing here is that the Ubuntu installer asked all the right questions and the sytem obviously had support for the 2200BG built-in.

I guess that Mepis 6 might have simply left this out when compiling their own custom kernel??

More curiousity: Are there any Linux distros that are set up to maximize the chances of success on a laptop/wireless?
