Ubuntu / Dlink Wireless
 

I am currently using Ubuntu. Im very new to linux, and installed it on my laptop to learn and play with it a while ago, and it was easy setup and instantly connected to network. Though I hadnt used it for a few months after installing, recently I decided to give it another shot and to my surprise it no longer had internet access. I messed around a bit, and then probably broke something so reinstalled the full thing last night.

Ive done some research, it is atheros (ath0) and the network .. button .. cannot list my network.

I believe my router is : whirlpool . net . au / index.cfm?a=h_view&model_id=28 (cannot post url, so remove spaces :) )DLink-614+, I dont know if its a big difference.


I have download madwifi, copied to cd and put on ubuntu but I was reading and saw madwifi already was installed ( though when I tried a reinstall using "make" bash error that it couldn't find the make command? Oh well.. )

I have read and most of what worked for others didnt seem to work for me, Ive been thinking there may be some network setting thats ruining it, but it shouldn't considering my dad's windows laptop instantly connects with no configuring.

EDIT: Also, I have connected ethernet thats hooked up to this computer to Ubuntu (before reinstall) and would instantly be able to connect.


EDIT2: I have kept looking into it, device manager lists the Atheros and I checked all networks and have seen a neighbor or twos, but I cannot connect even to their insecure networks - therefore I think its a problem with linux itself, but am definitely not positive.

I'd take a plunge into Ubuntu wiki at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ and search with "atheros". Then take a look at madwifi homepage at http://madwifi.org/ - there are some excellent HOWTO's there.

Also check if you have the restricted kernel modules installed - they should include the madwifi kernel module, which you need. Then check out the utility "network-manager", if you haven't already been using it.

The D-Link routers do not do DNS properly for linux boxes in my experience, I have fixed this in the past my asking / searching for the preferred DNS server of my ISP and entering that manually either in /etc/resolv.conf (form: nameserver ip-address) or through the netwoking menu options. Make sure to delete 192.168.1.1 or your routers address. At the moment the router periodically changes the DNS address back to 192.68.1.1, which I am trying to work out how to solve
