I set up a computer with Ubuntu 8.04, and non-secured wireless with no problems. Flawless.
I reconfigured with WPA and can get networking to work, but when I restart there's no network. I have to go into Network Manager, change a setting, then change it back, so that it resets the configuration to get it to work.
The point to changing it is not to actually change it, but to cause the software to reinitialize the interface. So, I can change the static IP to another IP, close, reopen, and change back to original values. After that the interface works.
I don't know what causes these problems, but I think issuing
$/etc/init.d/networking restart
would be a more efficient workaround, as you wouldn't have to bother with changing settings back and forth.
$/etc/init.d/NetworkManager restart
might also work. I am on Fedora 9, so I this is all taken from memory from the time I used Kubuntu about a year ago
It uses the ralink chipset. I don't think it's a driver issue, as it works fine as long as there's no wireless security. When I apply WPA on the router and Ubuntu, it works until restart. Then I have to reinitialize it to get it to work again.

Bad assumption.
Ubuntu has an awful implementation for (some) drivers - the 3945 has had mismatches with kernel code since (at least) Gutsy beta. For that, the fix is to use backports and the updated upstream code retro-fitted. Might work for you as well, depending on what has been backported. Check launchpad.
Im having the same problem, every time I restart my computer I have to re-enter the SSID. Sometimes it happens when ill be in the middle of something, this can be VERY annoying.
there must be a way of saving the network settings.
Also when you say $/etc/... I know that's a directory, but what do you meen?
