Unhappy Trouble connecting to a wireless network in FC6 with a wg111v2

Hi guys/girls,

For the past day or so, ive been trying to get a Fedora Core6 machine to connect to a private wireless network. THe adapter that im using is a netgear WG111v2 usb dongle.

I have gotten as far as using ndiswrapper to install the windows drivers for my device. Using modprobe ndiswrapper to interface wlan0. Using iwconfig wlan0 to change the settings for the device, to connect to the network. Creating a network script onif-wlan0 so that fedora thinks of it as an ethernet device. and Using the ifup wlan0 command to connect. Everytime i do though, im either told that the connection cant be made (please check cable :| ) when im using dhcp, or i get an active connection, but cant ping anything or go anywhere when i chose static connection.
When i type iwlist wlan0 scanning, the device lights up, and successfully shows the surrounding AP (usually with a strength of 65/100) but i still cant connect.
The AP uses 128bit WEP and i have made the necessary keys-wlan0 file, containg the key, but this doesnt solve anything.

Could someone please advise me of a solution to connect to the following ap?

SSID: SpeedTouch2717
128bit wepkey: 0244713227abcde0244713227
Connection: DHCP
AP IP address: 10.0.0.138
AP's MAC address can be provided if need be.

Cheers,
Tom

Try editing your /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0 file to something like;

TYPE=Wireless
DEVICE=wlan0
HWADDR=
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
GATEWAY=10.0.0.138
DOMAIN=
ONBOOT=yes
ONHOTPLUG=no
USERCTL=yes
IPV6INIT=no
PEERDNS=no
ESSID=SpeedTouch2717
CHANNEL=<the default AP channel here>
MODE=Auto
RATE=Auto

The output from the command 'iwlist wlan0 scan' should tell you which is the default AP channel to use.

Check/verify that the /etc/modprobe.conf file has a line like: alias wlan0 ndiswrapper

Is this "128bit wepkey: 0244713227abcde0244713227" hex or ascii (the passphase in plain test)??, if not sure (it looks like acsii) then try for the keys-wlan0 file:

KEY=S:0244713227abcde0244713227

Cheers Lenard for your advice.

My ifcfg-wlan0 looks pretty much the same as that, except more of the things are filled in (ie. HWADDR has the adapters MAC address and so on.)

Quote:

Im pretty sure that after i did modprobe ndiswrapper, i did alias wlan0 ndiswrapper, but i will make sure its in the config file as you said.

Its most probably plain text, as its the persons phone number and just the first few letters of the alphabet. Most probably entered in by them or a setup wizard. So I will try what you said.

Cheers,
Tom
