hello anybody???

archtoad6 10-04-2007 08:28 AM

  1. I haven't done Linux dial-up for years, so I can't give any direct help.
  2. You are experiencing the fall out of double posting:
    1. The moderator closed the "wrong" thread, i.e. the one that contained useful responses.
    2. The moderator didn't link the closed thread to this one. (Some do, many don't; I have no reason to believe it's required of them.)
    3. The moderator didn't combine the 2, again it can be done but it's not standard practice.
  3. You're being too impatient, LQ users are spread around the world, in different time zones, allow at least 24, if not 48, hours for all the replies to come in. Also we're volunteers ...
  4. You haven't bothered to completely fill out your profile, so we don't know where you are & therefore what local conditions are.
  5. You didn't provide a link to info. on your modem.
  6. You give no report of what happened when you followed the advice given in posts 3 & 4 of the closed thread. (You did follow their suggestions, didn't you?)
  7. Read this.

@archtoad6

sim_astro 12-03-2007 06:27 AM

try this

sudo wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf
sudo vi wvdial.conf

edit following lines
; username = <>
; password = <>
; phone = <>

so that it look like this

username = internet
password = internet
phone = #777
Stupid Mode = 1

sim_astro 12-03-2007 10:13 PM

and
don't forget to make entry in /etc/resolv.conf

use following command in ubuntu
sudo vi /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 202.54.15.30
nameserver 202.54.1.30
:wq to save and quit

this works for me on fedora 7

enjoy

I don't know whether there is still any interest in this thread, but ...

In post #5, the OP showed the successful results of a ping. This would show that the Internet connection is established, and, since the ping was by name, that DNS is working. I don't know what the problem with using the browser is.

divine18e,

If you are still interested in solving this, please post back.

archtoad6 01-05-2008 06:30 AM

If you have already solved it, please post what you did -- it will help the next person.

sim_astro 01-06-2008 10:30 PM

Dear Friend,

i agree that u are able to ping, but in browser u enter website name and not ip-address of website,

mapping from website name to ip-address is done by DNS. And in Linux /etc/resolv.conf is responsible to redirect the host to DNS. Where pinging is different thing (it only check the route and not help any other app like web-browser).

so just enter dns name in /etc/resolv.conf

nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
nameserver zzz.zzz.zzz.zzz

where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is ip of dns-1
and zzz.zzz.zzz.zzz is ip of dns-2

hope this will help u.

What you say about DNS is true. What you say about pinging is true if you are pinging by IP address. However, if you are pinging by name, then the ping command must first resolve the name through DNS (or /etc/hosts). Since I doubt the original poster had www.google.com in the hosts file, the fact that that the ping worked means DNS is working. In fact this is the standard way to tell if DNS is working. People are told to, in sequence:

Code:

ping localhost
ping <IP address>
ping <website name>

or for an example:

Code:

ping localhost
ping 64.179.4.146
ping www.linuxquestions.org

Pinging localhost verifies that networking works. Pinging the address (for sites that respond to pings!) verifies Internet access. Pinging by name shows the DNS system works.

Try it yourself. Move /etc/resolv.conf to a different directory or change the values in it to something bogus. Then try pinging something by name. When I did it, I got:

Code:

[user@Box user]$ ping www.google.com
ping: unknown host www.google.com
