Strange wifi happenings

I have a lucent based 802.11b chip that was built into my gateway 600 laptop.
It was detected fine by SuSE 9.1 pro.
Yet, problems arise. If i boot straight to linux on any network, I get an ip address, the ssid, channel, and all sorts of goodies that prove I have found the network. I can even ping machines on the local network. Yet, it all ends there. I cannot ping out.
Now here comes the weirdness.
If I boot windows xp, and browse for a bit, then restart into linux, I can browse fine (I'm doing it right now).
Am I missing something?

What happens if you restart your network via "/etc/init.d/network restart". It's possible your services
are not being started in the correct order, or there is not enough of a wait between services starting
up for everything to work properly.

Sounds like the dhcp server may not be populating the nameservers into the list. "cat /etc/resolv.conf"
will give you a list of the nameservers. See if the file is empty, is it populated after you restart the
network services?
