SMC2635W driver install instructions
 

I finally got my SMC 2635W wireless nic to work in Slackware 9.0. I thought that I would document what I did to get it to work to save someone else some time. The page is semi-newbie-friendly. I was too lasy to go into extreme detail on alot of things, but at the same time I tried to specify all of the commands I used during the install. Hope it helps.

Do you have to add ifconfig and route to your startup scripts?

I have to manually add the router's IP address and add rule to the firewall to open the connection.

I didn't have to. After running netconfig and specifying dhcp, everything worked fine for me.

I am on Red Hat 9.0. My version of gcc is gcc (GCC) 3.2.2 20030222.

I follow your instructions, when I hit make gcc produces lots of warnings about parse, type errors ect. In the end it fails with this error message:

/usr/include/linux/mii.h: At top level:
adm8201.c:139: storage size of `LM_timer_list' isn't known
adm8201.c:1737: storage size of `adm8211_driver' isn't known
{standard input}: Assembler messages:
{standard input}:40: Error: symbol `__devinitdata' is already defined
make: *** [adm8201.o] Error 1

Any surgestions. I really need to get this card working!

Man, I've been trying to get my SMC2635W to work for over a week now and my eyes can't focus past a couple of feet with the reading and thread-chasing I've been doing. Any chance the steps you have take might work with SuSE 9.1 (kernel 2.6.4)? I tried to go to your web page but got "object not found"...is there a typo by chance? My pulse is quickening at the thought of getting to a *newbie-friendly" site (semi or not). Thanks for any help!

New Open source driver for Adm8211 chipset
 

There is work on a open source driver for the adm8211 chipset. The effort is mainly for 2.6.6 kernel and above. There are some 2.4 make files. See the main thread for this project at:

I hope this helps with your problem. I used ndiswrapper with windrivers in Mnadrake 9.2 with success. I am using this new driver in Mandrake 10.0.

Thanks for the info. I've been following both threads. Couldn't get DrEvil's instructions to work and tried the ...105-2.6.tar.gz file without success as well. (My kernel's 2.6.4).

Have gotten myself a little smarter on some of what's involved in the meantime and will try both again. If that fails, I will document what I've done and post for some help and advice. Will probably do that in the 132161 thread.

In the meantime...insmod has been a problem in loading the driver, and I've been wondering whether modprobe might work better? Any thoughts? Thanks.

I also tried that URL. It doesn't work. I tried several variations, and managed to get a listing of that directory. There are no files ('cept for directories) in that directory. It does not appear to be a spelling error. Most likely, that resource just doesn't exist. That makes this thread quite useless.

Two year old posts about wireless networking are usually not very to the point, due to advancements in hardware and distros.
