Slow Wireless with Rosewill RNX G300 (RALINK 2561)

Linux driver installation help needed with wireless PCI card - currently terrible performance.

I have a newly assembled computer with a Rosewill RNX G300 PCI Wireless adapter, and a solid wireless WPA2 network. If I find a long enough cat-6 cord, I get lovely speeds via Speedtest.net, but wirelessly it's 1/20th or so the speed. My cell phone on WiFi sitting at the same location gets very fast tests (about 10x) while sitting where the computer is.

Wireless does work, but it's just awful. I finally found drivers - I'd been led on a wild goose chase trying to get the RALINK drivers from RALINK directly because they've been bought. The drivers I found were at the Rosewill site, but I am stumped to install them. I got through the first couple of steps, but step 3 has me stumped. I've already done stuff to verify the PCI card through command line. The computer is 20 feet away, but it's across a kitchen and wired is problematic.

I finally found the RALINK 2561 driver here:
http://www.rosewill.com/products/112...l_Download.htm

The instructions have me stumped. Here's the steps from the readme that comes from the zipped, tar'ed file.

I definitely did #1, tried #2 but not sure if I did it right and #3 doesn't work for me at all. I'm pretty new to Linux, but I'm a tech savvy guy working in software dev. In the instructions, I assume that the # symbol denotes comments to the right?
make config tells me there's no config to make, no file/dir(?) of that name, and there isn't. There's a Configure. I don't understand this bit at all yet.

quote:
1> $tar -xvzf RT61_Linux_STA_Drv_x.x.x.x.tar.gz
go to "./RT61_Linux_STA_Drv_x.x.x.x/Module" directory.

2> $cp Makefile.4 ./Makefile # [kernel 2.4]
or
$cp Makefile.6 ./Makefile # [kernel 2.6]
or
$cp Makefile.RTL865x ./Makefile # big endian platform

3> [kernel 2.4]
$chmod 755 Configure
$make config # config build linux os version

4> $make all # compile driver source code
4.1> $make install

5> $cp rt2561.bin /etc/Wireless/RT61STA/ # copy firmware
$cp rt2561s.bin /etc/Wireless/RT61STA/
$cp rt2661.bin /etc/Wireless/RT61STA/

6> $dos2unix rt61sta.dat
$cp rt61sta.dat /etc/Wireless/RT61STA/rt61sta.dat
# !!!check if it is a binary file before loading !!!

7> $load
#[kernel 2.4]
# $/sbin/insmod rt61.o
# $/sbin/ifconfig ra0 inet YOUR_IP up

#[kernel 2.6]
# $/sbin/insmod rt61.ko
# $/sbin/ifconfig ra0 inet YOUR_IP up
