Slow wireless internet connection DWL 650+ Suse 9.1
I successfully installed dwl 650+ but the connection I get is very slow (about the same as dial up). Is there anyway I can increase the speed? I get perfectly fine speed on windows XP.
Thanks |
I noticed that if I had the KWiFiManager running then the speed is a lot slower for me. Maybe there is something similar producing traffic on your wireless NIC.

check iwconfig, try iwconfig wi0 or eth0 (whatever your card is) rate auto examples:
iwconfig eth0 rate auto or iwconfig eth0 rate 11M |
linux:/usr/share/fluxbox # iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. sit0 no wireless extensions. wlan0 IEEE 802.11b+ ESSID:off/any Nickname:"linux" Mode:Managed Channel:11 Access Point: 00:09:5B:CB:88:42 Bit Rate:2Mb/s Tx-Power:18 dBm Sensitivity=176/255 Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Encryption key:off Power Management:off Link Quality:73/100 Signal level:63/100 Noise level:0/100 Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0 iwconfig eth0 rate 11M iwconfig eth0 rate auto returns nothing.. this is really weird. any suggestions? why is bit rate 2Mb/s? |
they will only return something on an error, you have to type
iwconfig all by itself to see if it changed your bitrate |
yes it changed my bitrate but the speed is still the same... its almost the same as dialup. Am I missing something here?

so there is no one who can help me with this problem? its working fine in windows and internet is fine when I access it using my ethernet port.. could it have something to do with the drivers... anyone?
|
do a search in this forum for running iwevent in one console, then iwconfig in another, to see if something else is affecting your card drivers
|
iwevent just gives me this:
Waiting for wireless events from interfaces... iwconfig gives me the regular output showing that I am connected at 11M.. dont know what the problem is.. i tried installing older version of the drivers but still the same problem.. any suggestions? |
i don't use your distro, but there may be a way to check your network traffic, perhaps running 'top' from a root console, then starting your network, see if anything strange comes up?

I got the same problem on my Mandrake 10.0 official & DWL-650+, once I finished installation, this defect just came up and I have no idea how to solve it coz I'm totally new in linux... BTW, as Mr. Jatt_thugz said this card works perfectly on winXP, just one different thing which is my "Bit Rate" shows "22Mb/s" (not 2 Mb/s) and that's it! Someone please tell us how to solve it or simply provide the related links, thanks in advance.
Forgot to say, I consider there is no problem on the net condition coz I have changed back to use the ethernet and the download speed is about 235Kb/s (as I use the wireless, the speed was 6Kb/s), and the hardware and the firmware for my DWL-650+ is H/W:B1 F/W:1.9. |
I believe its the drivers that are causing the problem.. thanks for all your suggestions guys. Any new suggestions?

Hi,
I finally solved the problem by installing driverloader from http://www.linuxant.com/company/ . It loads windows drivers properly. thanks |
I have tried the driverloader provided by the link you said, however, it still doesn't work at all...
I don't know why, when I install the rpm, the message just told me "No devices detected by the driverloader".. How can I do? I'm getting really nervous with this mass.. Mr. Jatt_thugz, was your installing process really smooth? or you may tell your experience here.. thanks! |
1) do uname -r in console to find out exactly which kernel u have.
2) download and install the rpm specific to your kernel 3) simply point your browser to DriverLoader's web configurator at http://127.0.0.1:18020/ and login as "root" to complete the installation. 4) reboot your machine with your wlan card in it. 5) iwconfig wlan0 will show you your card 6) ifdown eth0 7) ifdown wlan0 6) ifup wlan0 to get the internet connection going tell me if it doesnt work for you.. good luck and btw instructions are on linuxant website as well. |
