Slackware Wifi Problem
I have a rt2500 chipset card 'working' with the rt2500 module. The card has a static address (which i want it too), and this is currently the output of ifconfig:
ra0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:02:44:AC:38:43

Now, the issue that I have, is that my ibook (which i need the wireless access for) only supports 801.11b to the best of my knowledge. When trying to find the wireless connection from my ibook (g3, standard airport), it doesn't see it. Is there a way in which i can make sure my wifi card in my slack box is broadcasting as a b, (and pref a g too? but not required).
Any help whatsoever would totally be appreciated.
Do you have the slack box setup as a router?
Is your ibook on the same channel? If the slack box is setup as a router and the card is configured as a b then the broadcast would be b. Your network would be backwards compatible if you setup with a g broadcast.
We need a little more information about how your wlan is configured. Is the slack the router? I don't use MACs' any longer but the network should be straight forward on either.
The main thing to remember is that the wlan cards are backwards compatible. If you broadcast with a g then your b cards on the same channel should see the signal.
Also, if your iBOOK is simply trying to connect to a home router that is setup in G mode - you will need to ensure that the router is setup for 'Mixed Mode' or similar - if it is G only then the iBOOK will not play..
** actually i may be misreading what you are saying. Like gwsandvik says, are you connecting the iBOOK to the slackware machine?
** another thing i have noticed about my girlfriends iBOOK is it doesn tnot like connecting to LAN's that are 'open' only likes Shared Keys or 'restricted' lans..
yeah, connecting to the slackware machine from the ibook.
I have the same issue with the restricted/open. ibook doesn't like anything except open :[
sorry my mistake - must only like 'open' hehe :)
from the output it does not look like the slack is using encryption... i would think it should work if you try connect to 'ad-hoc' network and manually enter the essid..
It looks like the ra0 device is running in B mode anyway @ 11mbits
yeah, the older ibooks (g3, and low end g4's) all used b. Just doesn't seem to like connecting to an encypted net :(
