Slackware 12.1 wifi help.
 

Hello all.

I am new to Slackware 12.1 from Ubuntu (all distros). I am having a problem getting my wifi network working properly. This wouldn't be as much of an issue if there were an /etc/network/interfaces file. Here is my situation.

I have installed Slackware 12.1 on my desktop that has a wmp11 v4 linksys wifi card. I used ndiswrapper to get the card working and it 'appears' to be. I can see my wireless networks but cannot connect to them. I changed the settings in the KDE network control module to be static and cannot change it from static back to dhcp. Infact, this tool does not really do anything I have to bring the wlan0 interface up and down manually. Also, a side note I had to add
modprobe ndiswrapper
ifconfig wlan0 up

to my /etc/rc.d/rc.local file for it to work from boot.

I am running KDE in runlevel4.

I am not too sure what you are asking here. If you want to configure WLAN the "Slackware way", then you would want to edit /etc/rc.d/rc.wireless.conf. If you are looking for a native WiFi configuration tool in Slackware, then unfortunately you aren't going to find one; Slackware ships with just the basic wireless-tools package, nothing more.

Anything beyond that would have to be built from source or installed via an unofficial package.

Sorry for the confusion I am looking for a way to edit my network settings in vi not through the point n click method.

I have the KWIFImanager and can see my networks and it says it connects to the one i choose but I don't get an IP address.

My question now is. how do i fully connect to these networks? Is it easier to edit the /etc/rc.d/rc.wireless.conf

what kind of security do you use - WEP or WPA?

I find that after having set up wlan0 then running:
dhclient wlan0

will connect.
