slackware 10.1 can't seem to find my wireless card

I've installed Slackware 10.1 with the 2.6.11 kernel on my Fujitsu-Siemens AMILO Pro2020, and I'm struggling to get the wireless card up and running. I've loaded the ipw2200 driver, but I don't know how to get the machine to recognise the device. Running iwconfig gives me:

lo no wireless extensions

eth0 no wireless extensions

Any ideas? (my linux skills are somewhat primitive, so please be gentle...)

Can you tell us how you installed it? Did you modprobe the card? and so on. Check our Tutorials section, I believe there is a Tutorial on this.

And welcome to LQ :D

Thanks for the welcome.

I had a look at the tutorial, but it seems to assume that the card is already recognised by the system. I used modprobe to load the ipw2200 driver, what do you mean by "modprobe the card"?

XavierP 05-03-2005 01:19 PM

Apologies, I meant modprobe ipw2200, just that i seem to be losing the ability to type in English :)

In addition to the Tutorial entry, I also found this: http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net/INSTALL which give full install instructions. And other files and instructions can be found here: http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net/ - I guess that you have already found these, but I include them just in case.

If you are using the stock Slackware kernel, you may need to recompile to add in the necessary modules.

Ok, after a closer look at the relevant documents I realised that it does actually help to read the instructions! My wireless card is now recognised.

Cool - and nice one. :)

pshhhhhh who needs instructions, I prefer to mess it all up and then learn a whole bunch trying to fix it later

oldmanofthesea 05-10-2005 04:03 AM

Damn! I thought I had it, but now I can't configure the network connection.

when I try to set the WEP key with iwconfig, I get:

Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A) :
SET failed on device eth1 ; Operation not supported.

iwconfig gives:

lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

Thats all your iwconfig shows? It doesnt show your wireless card?

oldmanofthesea 05-10-2005 09:48 AM

For some reason the name "eth1" has been given to the wireless device. I don't know if this has any significance. iwconfig allows me to set some parameters, such as ESSID, but it won't let me assign a WEP key and get the device up and running.

Atrocity 05-10-2005 11:13 AM

Yea thats no big deal my onrinco card is eth1 as well, not sure why it wont let you do a WEP key, what kind of drivers are you using, or was the card picked up automatically by Slackware. If you had to install drivers you might want to look at the driver documentation or website!

Atrocity 05-10-2005 11:14 AM

Also I think it makes a difference if are putting in a hash or a passphrase, I am not positive about that

oldmanofthesea 05-10-2005 11:57 AM

Thanks. I installed the IPW2200 driver. I guess it's back to the instructions!
