Post the output of iwconfig eth1 before running dhcpcd eth1 (dhcpcd eth1 is what I meant by "pulling an IP address").

Is there any MAC address filtering in place on the router? If so, disable it.

Is the SSID of the router being broadcast? If not enable it.

Try adding a gateway: route add default gw <router_IP_address>

okay MAC filtering is off and the router is broad casting the ssid,

output from iwconfig eth0 ( changed again)
Code:
eth0      IEEE 802.11b/g  ESSID:"Jones"  Nickname:"slack"
          Mode:Managed  Frequency=2.442 GHz  Access Point: 00:14:6C:AB:0E:D0
          Bit Rate:11 Mb/s   Tx-Power=18 dBm
          RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Link Quality:0  Signal level:0  Noise level:0
          Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:0   Missed beacon:0
and the output from iwlist eth0 scan
Code:
eth0      Scan completed :
          Cell 01 - Address: 00:14:6C:AB:0E:D0
                    ESSID:"Jones"
                    Protocol:IEEE 802.11bg
                    Mode:Master
                    Channel:7
                    Encryption key:off
                    Bit Rates:54 Mb/s
                    Extra: Rates (Mb/s): 1 2 5.5 11 6 9 12 18 24 36 48 54
                    Quality=100/100  Signal level=-157 dBm
                    Extra: Last beacon: 196ms ago
sorry not understanding about changing the default gateway, would the ip address be the network of the router?

Key info:

Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0

Your wireless card isn't connected. It sees the access point (obviously, since the scan returned the right SSID), so the radio is on.

Have you installed the firmware needed by the card when using the bcm43xx driver?

Have you tried ndiswrapper, instead?

Here's something I don't understand in his post. I mean, -157 dBm is really in the dirt and yet it reports 100/100.

Quality=100/100 Signal level=-157 dBm

I'm not convinced the adapter is functioning properly, so I consider any of the values returned by Wireless Tools to be suspect.

ive got the same firmware, ive used sucessfully on debian and ubuntu. So i dont think its the firmware.

ndiswrapper isnt an option, im running on power(slackintosh otherwise that would have been my first choice.

Im not sure what else can be done with the card/driver working like this, Thanks for all the help. Any further suggestions would be much appreciated
