Request advice on card choice and software needed to run 'g' ap

Two things:
1) I would like to get a 802.11g card for my laptop... I borrowed a friend's Truemobile 1300, it was a nightmare getting it working... I'm wondering what a good 802.11g pcmcia card is as far as having good (or at least decent) native linux driver support, I do not want to use ndiswrapper.

2) Above but for a desktop card (PCI), what I want to do with the desktop is run linux on it, and use it to host a wireless network, and make that network connected with a wired network (i.e., all I want the machine to do is "route" traffic from the wireless to the wired network, I have DHCP and routing set up on another machine.) What software do I need to accomplish this?

I know I'm asking a lot, but would appreciate some advice, trying to give linux another try after many frustrating attempts in the past. Thanks in advance.
