Repeater questions

hi folks. i have a bit of an issue with a repeater i am trying to use. the repeater is a d-link dwl-800ap+ and i set it up according to the instructions. however, the final process states that i need to use the window$ software in order to connect to the actual repeater. now i know there has to be another way that is os independant. my other question is that if it is supposed to be a repeater then why should i be required to connect to it? shouldn't the repeater simply amplify the signal seemlessly without any notice on an end user's part?
