Prism54 wlan Not going into master mode
 
Intersil Corporation ISL3890 [Prism GT/Prism Duette]/ISL3886 [Prism Javelin/Prism Xbow] (rev 01)
refuses to go into master mode. (On ubuntu desktop setup)

I can configure whatever i want while the interface is down and as soon as i try and bring it up, I'm left with an "operation not permitted" signal.

I've been google trawling and alot of it is over my head, eg 2.7.0.0 firmware for the chipset. my lsmod shows the module as being prism54pci, modprobe for that seems to work, and to be honest im out of my depth, any world weiry guidance would be greatly appreciated.

What works for me
 
AFAIK you're using the wrong module and wrong firmware. The 2.7.0.0 firmware should only be used with 3886 chip which you may not have. Unload the current module:

# modprobe p54pci
# modprobe p54common
Remove or rename the firmware file and place the 1.0.4.3 firmware at the same place, name it 'isl3890'.

Then load the proper module:

# modprobe prism54
Then try master mode, set essid and bring up the interface:

# iwconfig ethx mode master essid "whatever"
# ifconfig ethx up
Should work - at least it does so here :)
