Orinoco Gold Card not running with Suse 8.2

Hi everybody!

As you can imagine Iīm a newbie to Linux OS :-/

I have some problmes getting my Orinoco Gold Card running under Suse 8.2
I just tried to setup the Card in YAST2 ControlPanel.
If I run lsmod it says

orinoco_cs 4436 0 (unused)
orinoco 31188 0 [orinoco_cs]
hermes 5924 0 [orinoco_cs orinoco]
...

The system does not find the Card anyway.
iwconfig says so either.

Maybe anyone can help me to setup the card properly step by step.
This would be very nice!!!

Thank you very much!!!

the drivers may be loaded, but is your wireless interface up (some drivers need you to manually bring it up with ifconfig first.)

do iwconfig , and use the interface name shown (eth0/wlan0/...) with ifconfig (ifconfig interfacename).

re:

it might sound strange but the card is working now! the thing is, that i did not do anything but release the card an put it back to the pcmcia slot before starting suse...

do you have any experience with kismet?
I read that the orinoco drivers have to be patched to make the proggie run.
So, if you could help me again with this stuff would be very nice :-)
maybe you know s.th. about the configuration of the prog...

thank you so far:-)

hi, sorry i didnt get back earlier - was away. yeah, sometimes you need to do that routine to load the card drivers. i think its more a kernel config problem more than the drivers.

well, what exactly do you need kismet for? lemme know that. just so that if theres something else we can do without having to patch, we should.

I think it is mendatory to patch the file. i read this everywhere i looked before. i guess the main thing is, that the card does not support monitor mode with the original linux drivers. thatīs the reason why it has to be patched. i already tried to patch but with the little bit of experience that i have, it was not possible to get it running
do you have any experiences with this programm? i gues i asked that before
hope to get some good solutions from you

hi. yeah, i've used kismet, but didn't find it of any use. you say you want to put the card in monitor mode? im assuming you want to be able to scan for ap's around? i hope you also know that while in monitor mode, your interface is pretty much like a one-way street. you will only be scanning for beacons and not be doing anything while in monitor mode. so, unless you are using your card to collect data and work on it, what you should be lookin for is the scanning patch from shmoo. the last i had used it, it was not supported for kernel v2.6
but it works great for the 2.4's. get the 0.13d driver (no other driver version) from david gibsons page (he's the maintainer), and patch it with the scanning patch from http://airsnort.shmoo.com/orinocoinfo.html.

that's what i did to get my card to scan.

Oh, i hope you donīt think i want to do illeagal stuff with that proggie! I have to write something about security in wlans for my school!

I will try to get that patch but which file is there to patch? do i have to delete some old drivers? do have to compile the kernel?

can you tell me what you did exactly? step by step? I will try on my own my own first, but i wonīt mind some more of your support :-)

thank you so far!
hope to hear you soon :-)

sorry for any inconvenience :-/

hi, sorry i wasnt replying back any faster. was a bit busy with some work (and play, heh)

glad to know you got it working. and i wasnt thinking bout anything illegal. as i said, i didnt know why you wanted the monitor mode, if all you wanted to do was scan for APs.

cool - have fun now.
