Operating router AP concurrently in bridge mode
Do any of the open source wireless router projects support operating a wireless box in bridge mode (e.g. acts as a client to an access point, allowing ethernet connected devices to reach the access point), or better yet, in concurrent bridge and AP mode?
My new network will consist of 2 wireless boxes. I prefer to use exactly the same box in each case (and buy a 3rd for backup and experimenting). One of them will be connected directly to the cable modem's ethernet handoff, and also to other devices nearby if needed (e.g. BR-DVD player that uses net access, etc). This one will be the AP for access to the internet. The 2nd box will be in the computer room. It needs to communicate wirelessly to the 1st box so it can reach the internet. It will then be connected to desktops and servers there. I also have a wireless print and prefer to have it use the 2nd box instead of the 1st box, since it will be close to the 2nd and far from the first. I'm considering the D-Link DIR-825 dual band box. The fact that it is dual band may make it easy to do this kind of stuff (by making box 1 be AP at 5.8 GHz and box 2 be AP at 2.4 GHz)? I wish I could use ad-hoc mode, but other devices (printer, laptops with a proprietary OS) will want to be in normal mode as a client, so I need at least a 2.4 GHz AP. Maybe the 5.8 GHz can be in ad-hoc mode? |
