openSuse 11.2 wireless is attached to router only when eth0 cable is plugged in

I can't believe this is happening!

recently installed openSuse 11.2 on a laptop along with VirtualBox with Windows-XP as guest.

Was using eth0 LAN connection but need a wireless connection for use elsewhere.

The inbuilt wireless is an rt2500 device, which works fine under win-xp.
After hours of struggling I got it to connect to my router but only by using Kinternet.

I found that the lan cable needs to be attached whereupon both devices show as being attached to the router.

On removal of the lan cable, both devices, wlan0 & eth0, disappear from the router "Attached Devices" list.

I have scoured the forums and tried numerous suggestions, comparing config files to no avail.

My last attempt was to attach my trusty ZD1211B USB device.
Having configured it as wlan1 & instructing wlan0 to never start, I find I have exactly the same problem.

The wireless Connection tab on Kinternet shows the wireless to be associated but the router shows it not to be attached.

And, "Yes" the wireless router does work. My neighbour borrows it from time to time!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Any particular reason for 11.2? 11.3 has been out for 6 months plus and 11.4 is out in a couple of weeks.

From what I remember, kinternet is useful for ppp connections, but isn't really something you ought to need for a connection to your router.

That's odd; how do you have networking set up (ifup or network manager (or wicd))? What does ifconfig show? can you ping your router?

I already had 11.2 downloaded on a DVD!
Plus the fact that I have another PC running 11.2, so had a machine to compare configs, etc.

Tried both methods without success.
However, found a suggestion on a forum to try using wicd.

BRILLIANT! Working a treat now. The problem was with wireless authentication, but for the life of me, I can't see what I setup in wicd that was any different to that using Yast.

Many thanks for you responce.

Those are the ones that I like best...the ones that get solved without me having to know what I'm doing! Don't have any idea why wicd should work better than networkmanager (that's wrong...many people claim that wicd is better than networkmanager, but both should work, even if one does work better than the other), except in early versions of kde 4, where the networkmanager was really not good.
