NM works open but won't connect when WPA on

Really scratching my head on this one...

Ubuntu 6.10(edgy) / Atheros 0023 (DWA-542) / NM installed successfully.

Everything happens like it should. Network Manager sees the available AP's, and so long as I have the security setting on my router set to "open/none" it connects automatically and smoothly.

As soon as I switch WPA-personal back on, I lose wireless connection. The card still sees the AP, I can still request it to connect, it asks me for the passkey like it's supposed to, and then......nothing.

It tries for about 20 seconds to connect, fails and falls back to the wired connection (if I'm wired up....I've tried it both with and without a hardline present).

I know wpa_supplicant is installed. I uninstalled and re-installed it twice trying to get the system to patch into my router. Is there a command I should be entering to confirm it is working correctly?

Out of ideas here.....anyone have some experience with this?

Feelin'...wired.

Same problem

I have the same problem. I am using Debian etch on a Dell laptop with an ipw2200 wireless card. The kernel is a custom 2.6.20.

I have networkmanager and wpa_supplicant installed... nm works fine with wired and unsecured wireless networks, but not WPA (WEP doesn't work either, by the way). It sees the network, asks for the passkey, then fails to connect. I read through this here

http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Network_Manager_with_WPA

but it's a little old and I don't think it really applies to me. It seems like everything's installed and working, but it won't connect. Anyone know where to start?

Thanks
