Netgear WG511 Almost working on Slackware 10.2?

Hey everyone,
So I was really excited when my the lights on my WG511v2 started flashing, I thought I might have fixed it just with correct BIOS configuration and netconfig. but alas, if I shutdown my wired card (via ifconfig eth0 down), and ping someting I get no response. Here are my various config files. I am running Slackware 10.2 on a Toshiba Satellite 2545XCDT (with added hard drive space for kicks).
ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:E0:98:08:10:40
inet addr:192.168.1.4 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

collisions:5 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:283659 (277.0 Kb) TX bytes:95052 (92.8 Kb)

eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:14:6C:71:3F:2E
UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)

lo Link encap:Local Loopback

TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0

and iwconfig

15:00.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88w8335 [Libertas] 802.11b/g Wireless (rev 03)

The rumor is that since my card says "Marvell Technology Group" I can't make it run naturally under Linux, I gotta run a wrapper. I guess my questions are:
1) is that really true? I mean, both the conection and transfer lights are blinking, so that suggests there is hope, right...?
2) if there is hope, how do I do the final setup on this thing?

Thanks! I am a relative newbie....used linux at work for a long time, but this is my first install. Thanks to anyone who gives me anythintg!

Have you tried;
stopping eth0, then
# iwconfig eth1
# iwconfig eth1 essid youressid
# iwconfig eth1 key open yourencryptionkey(if needed)
# ifconfig eth1 XXX.XXX.X.X up
# route add default gw XXX.XXX.X.X
ping www.google.com -c 3
something like that...

Ok well that did something....

ifconfig eth0 down
iwconfig eth1

eth1 IEEE 802.11-DS ESSID:"NETGEAR" Nickname:"thinker"
Mode:Managed Bit Rate=1 Mb/s
RTS thr=2346 B Fragment thrff
Encryption keyff
Power Managementff
Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

iwconfig eth1 essid "NETGEAR"
(no encription key, iwconfig output said encription key=off)
ifconfig eth1 IP up (used inet address from ifconfig)
route add default gw IP
and I got in response to the last line:
SIOCADDRT: Network is down

when I typed ping www.google.com -c 3 it thought for about 30 seconds and then told me unknown host.

I checked my current wireless settings and they are that SSID with disabled security. Getting closer I can feel it! Thanks so far!

Instead of this, if you don't know your default gateway;
route add default gw IP
try
dhcpcd eth1

Nope, I do that and it hangs there for some time, then returns to the command line. I type 'ping www.google.com' and get unknown host. In addition, when I give a ifconfig command only the 'lo' exists, eth1 is just gone. Makes me think it failed in finding an IP?

Any more help out there?
