Have fun!
alritie,
you're going to have a lot of fun doing this, so get ready... I recommend the Madwifi driver, which is one for the Atheros cards you can download the source here: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/mad...0.9.3.3.tar.gz and unzip it with ark or whatever (just remember where you put it!) first of all, if you installed from the DVD, then don't pay attention to this section ------------------------------------------------------------------ if you didn't install from DVD, you need lots of external sources you need to: 1. press Alt + F2 2. type in Code:
kdesu /sbin/yast2 'repositories' /sbin/yast2 is YaST2 control center 'repositories' is the module name 3. Click the "Add" button at the bottom 4. Choose "specify URL..." 5. copy & paste this link into the box: http://download.opensuse.org/distrib...10.3/repo/oss/ 6. Name the source and click next 7. wait for it to do its thing and accept any licence agreement 8. Click "Finish" what you just did was add an installation source for packages, if you ever have to add a source, just go through yast ----------------------------------------------------------------------- next, we have to get the packages we need for madwifi to run press Alt +F2 and type Code:
kdesu /sbin/yast2 'sw_single' sw_single is the module for Software Management once here, search for kernel-source, wireless tools, glibc, make, gcc you need the following packages: kernel-source wireless-tools glibc make automake gcc click continue to the pop-up message, it is just informative then click accept at the bottom it will install the packages and may ask you to swap cd's after so, it will run SuSEconfig, and just click no after finishing -------------------------------------------------------------------------- after this, press Alt + F2 and type "konsole" into it. once a white window has appeared, then type: Code:
cd /<location of madwifi folder> **The ~ is a wildcard that represents your home directory, use it in place of /home/<username> it save a bunch of typing!!** cd stands for change directory then type : Code:
make && su type root's password when prompted again, root is the most powerful account in Linux, you have to power to seriously screw up your computer the && just saves you an extra step, using && allows you to run multiple commands in just one line after you are switched, you should see a red command line now then type: Code:
make install ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Congratulations! you just installed the madwifi driver!(assuming you got no error messages) But our adventure into Linux is not over yet, after celebrating, press Alt + F2 and type in Code:
kdesu /sbin/yast2 'lan' and under network setup method, select "User controlled with NetworkManager" ifup is command-line based and isn't very user friendly after that go back to the "Overview" tab, you should see you Netgear card as Atheros Netgear... something like that. highlight that card and click "configure" at the bottom move over to the "Hardware" tab and look where it says module name. It should say ath_pci, but if not, then change it. once finished with that, click next and then input your settings. (don't worry about the encryption message) Then click next and then finish --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- as soon as you exit, press Alt + F2 again and this time, type: Code:
knetworkmanager once the application is launched (if not already active) right-click and select your network name Sometime, it will say no wireless networks, this is not the case. Just right-click and click connect "to other network" then type your network name and press ok. It should connect after all this and good luck! Sorry for the super log post, but it works better this way instead of finding a prebuilt package |
