Netgear MA521 Wireless config w/ Suse 9.1

I am a total newbie to linux, and I can't figure out why my wireless card is not working with Suse 9.1. Suse 9.1 correctly identifies the hardware... and I put in the WEP encryption info... but just the same, nothing works... Everything seems like it's configured right, but no there is no connection to the router... Help someone!

You're going to have to post some details. Just saying "it doesn't work" doesnt' give anyone enough information to help you.

Post the outputs of iwconfig and ifconfig. Also, how are you trying to get an IP address?

That's odd. I'm assuming that sit0 is the wireless card, but it is being shown as having no wireless extensions. That suggests that either SUSE is using the wrong driver or has otherwise screwed up the wireless installation.

Could you provide some more details about the wireless card itself? Things like name, model and the output of lspci. Also, please look through the output of dmesg and see if there are any messages at boot time about the wireless card.

First off, thanks for bothering to reply... you are the one person out of countless views that has bothered to do so... The wireless card is a Netgear MA521 card, but I have gotten the same results with many cards including a DLink DWL-650 and a DLink DWL-650+. Here is the output you requested... Thank you for the help again!

I'm not sure what Suse is telling you, but I see no indication that your wireless card is being recognized.

If you look through your dmesg, you'll see this:
Quote:
eth0: VIA VT6102 Rhine-II at 0xd800, 00:40:45:12:83:77, IRQ 11.
And from your lspci there is this:

Quote:
0000:00:12.0 Ethernet controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6102 [Rhine-II] (rev 74)
I think that is your wired ethernet connection since a couple of lines down in lspci is this:

Quote:
0000:02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.: Unknown device 8180 (rev 20)
I know the Realtel 8180 chips are for wireless, but I think that linux support is spotty. There is a thread with an older version of suse that claims success and gives reasonable detail. You might also want to check the Realtek site and see if they have Linux drivers for this. Realtek occasionally supports their hardware in Linux. If those two fail, then I think also that ndiswrapper support the realtek 8180 chipset, but I would use this as a last resort.

i also bought the ma521 pcmcia card, i had a few problems but its working now. i needed to setup my device using driver loader from [URL=http://www.linuxant.com[/URL] not an ideal solution as you have to buy it but its very easy to setup and get working for your lan.
as for the www i still having problems, i have to enter 'route add default gw 10.0.0.2' as root each time i log onto suse. i have not got a clue as to how i can automate this task, but as its all working atm im not too bothered, if you dont have a router/gateway i doubt you will have any probs.
