Need wifi support for Broadcom 4318 -- synaptic package manager won't work

1. Newbie trying to use Debian etch. Any advantages to using Ubuntu?

2. Can't get wireless going. Have 4318 chip. Tried following recipe on 64Studio (Debian derivative), downloaded bcm43xx, tried to install using Debian installer. Ran for 2 hours with no end in sight. Could not stop the process. Rebooted. Now Synaptic Package Manager won't work. Updates thinks some other installer is running. BCM43xx.ko file stored in /lib/modules/2.6.18-4-486/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/bcm43xx. Trying to run updates gets this error

E: The package bcm43xx-firmware needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.
E: Internal error opening cache (1). Please report.

This thread is being closed because it is a duplicate of http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...m-chip-631863/. You also posted your question in the intro forum so I'll move this to Wireless networking.
