ndiswrapper, wpa_supplicant, prism duette WORKS!

first some history:
in a recent post to this board, i wrote saying that i could not get ndiswrapper to work with my smc2835w (version 1) pcmcia card. this card uses the prism duette chipset. one helpful person responded saying that there is a prism54 native linux driver that may work with my card. in fact, this is true, to some extent. indeed, i got prism54 to work with my card back in april. i even got it to work with WEP. but i was unsatisfied b/c prism54 does not support wpa as of yet. so while i patiently wait, i decided to look for other solutions.

up until recently, the only way i could get the card to work with wpa was with linuxant's driverloader. but again, i did not find this very satisfying b/c after my free 30 day trial expires, i will have to pay $20 to use it further. so on i searched for a solution.

fast forward to today:
after reading ndiswrapper's pages very thoroughly, i found that netgear's wg511 pcmcia card also uses the prism duette chipset. so i decided to try and use its winXP driver with ndiswrapper. yeah, talk about a hack- using a windows driver not even designed for my card in linux ...?!!?

well, talk about miracles- it actually worked! i just followed the ndiswrapper instructions and it all worked (loaded) on my first try. i then started up wpa_supplicant and after doing an ifup on my interface, that even worked on my first try! i am currently using ndiswrapper 1.3rc1 and wpa_supplicant 0.3.9. my kernel version and distro are in my sig.

so what's the point of this post? it's to give other people hope, especially if they use a card with the prism duette chipset. after going through everything that i have gone through, i think i could possibly lend advice to anyone trying to get such a card up and running, whether it is with prism54/WEP/firmware issues or ndiswrapper/wpa or driverloader in the event you get desperate.

cheers.

Thank you for taking the time to document your success. That's how others benefit from your experience.

Please consider adding an entry to the HCL as well.

The HCL is the Hardware Compatibility List on this site,
check it out at http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/index.php
It's a database of linux-compatible products.
