ndiswrapper make error SUSE 9.1

Hey all,

when I make or make install ndiswrapper, I get the following blurb as things scroll past on my screen:

WARNING: Symbol version dump /usr/src/linux-2.6.5-7.108-obj/i386/default/Module.symvers is missing, modules will have CONFIG_MODVERSIONS disabled.

It seems to finish properly, but then upon trying to modprobe ndiswrapper, it does not work (no error, but there is an error loading the module if the log is checked. I have forgotten how to do this since I'm a newbie). I can't get past this point.

I got this all working under Mandrake 10. Hopefully someone can help me!!

Edit: I remembered how to get that log with dmesg. Here is what it says...

ndiswrapper: unsupported module, tainting kernel.
ndiswrapper version 0.8 loaded
ndiswrapper: loadndiswrapper failed (59904)

Thanks.

Anyone? I'm really loving linux in general--its everything I could possibly want on my laptop. But I need wireless!

Don't let me go back to windows! Please!

What ver ndiswrapper are you installing?

(Don't get your hopes up - I'm just a newbie with a near identical problem)

Does that mean you downloaded the ndiswrapper-0.10 tarball? If you did then I have the exact same problem. Same ver SuSE, same ndiswrapper, same warning during make, same error in dmesg.

Doesn't get us anywhere of course.

BTW, I'm trying to load drivers for a Realtek chip based device.

Nope. Edimax pci card as it happens.

I just downloaded the trial version of driverloader by linuxant. It seems to work in that the module runs, the driver is picked up and the wireless adaptor is recognised. That's as far as I've got.

Hrm...

I might give them a try. How does it work, a one time payment and then you have access to their software forever?

One month free trial then $19 and it's yours. I also tried downloading previous versions of ndiswrapper and testing them. It starts working around version 0.8 - the module loads and my device shows up - but I am unable to configure anything. The very problem I was trying to solve in the first place by upgrading to 0.10.

I hate to go this far and then end up paying, but I'm running out of time.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I got ndiswrapper (this version) working under Mandrake 10, but I moved to SUSE 9.1.

Do you know how easy it is to scan for AP's ? Because if it turns out that after all this work the SSID needs to be manually input to get on a wireless network and there is no way to scan and see what SSIDs are being broadcast, I am going to give up now and reinstall Windows.

I'm not sure if there's an auto scan option or not, but I'm pretty sure there is. Don't give up yet - I found another thread on another board which may solve the config problem I had with the earlier ndiswrapper. Have you tried simply installing the original version which comes with 9.1?

Delete the failed install files manually and then install the rpm on the cd using yast. Then add the windows driver and modprobe ndiswrapper from the command line and look at dmesg - it should pick up your device. It did mine anyway.

Then you have the config problems to look forward to

Haha! Through some combination of installing the version that came with SUSE and toying with it, it works now!

I still need to clean it up, get rid of the other installation. I'm not sure what needs deleting.

Good job though! Newbie teamwork

Now I wonder how to configure this so it always starts up when I boot?

Don't bother - you might end up deleting something you need. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Get it all working manually and then
Code:
ndiswrapper -m
I think...

So it's all working and you see the network and get out to the internet? Do me a favour and try and let me know what you did because I'm still struggling. You ended up using ndiswrapper off the cd, which version exactly? What order did you do things in? Did you use YAST to enter your wireless settings of did you do it from iwconfig?, etc. etc.
