Mandrake 9.1 and USB Wireless Adapter!!!!!!!!! (really need help)

Hello, im using Mandrake 9.1 and am trying to setup a wireless USB adapter, the Belkin F5D6050 one. I am desperate, i dont know what to do. I downloaded the atmel drivers and compiled them, and when i plug in the device Mandrake seems to rocognize it and assigns it a USB port number, but it is not recognized as an ethernet card, i mean, the internet part is not activated at all, iwconfig does not rocognize it and it doesnt appear in my internet configurations. I really need help and would appreciate it. I think there is a new kernel which autodetects the atmel chipset devices....can someone tell me if this is true, and if it is, which kernel is it ??

SOMEONE PLZ HELP ME :) PLEASE, I WOULD APRECIATE IT.

Belkin USB Wireless Network Adapter

I have the exact same adapter and have had no luck execpt once. While installing MAndrake 9.1 I had the adapter setup and running out of the box. It worked for 3 days. Now I cannot get the thing working at all under Linux. I am actually hoping that Suse 8.2 which has apparently more wireless networking feature and drivers will make this painless. If I here anything I will let you know.

This is the only thing that keeps me in the windows world, which I want to leave ASAP.

Belkin USB F5D6050 Network adaptor.

Got it:

From inside Mandrake, launch the Mandrake Control Center (You may have to enter your root password). Then select "Network and Internet", the click on "DrakConnect helps you set up your network and Internet connection" , then click on "Wizard" from there I selected both "Auto Detection and Expert Mode".

Then select only "Lan Connection - ethernet ..." click next. From there if you already have another adaptor (I have the SIS integrated 900 ethernet), select "yes" to Do you have another one ?

From the list given, select usbvnet_rfmd(ATMEL 503A USB CARD), click next,

Next question again: Do you have another one ?, click no, click next,

Just keep clicking yes until the following question is asked:
The network needs to be restarted. Do you want to restart it ?

select yes.

You should be almost done. If the internet does not work at this point, I would just reboot and try to connect to the internet after the reboot,

Thank you very much sylvain! I appreciate your interest very much. I got back to windows to setup the wireless network, but now some hope has returned and ill try it on Linux again. Once again, thanks. Ill go and try it and make you know if I got it to work.

Regards,

slop

Belkin F5D6050

Let me know. All I can say is that when you install Mandrake 9.1, make sure to configure the network during installation and select the driver I mentionned.

Good Luck.

Thank you both for your input. I tried the above steps with the Belkin FSD6050 wireless USB adapter and got no result. Is there any other tip to consider?
Is the built-in firewall a possible hazard?
How do you set WEP (encryption) in Mandrake 9.1?
Thank you very much for any additional input.

Belkin FSD 6050 Wirelss USB Adapter

I tried again this time with the WEP (encryption) turned off on the wireless access point, AND IT WORKED. I am writing this from my Linux machine now. All that's left to figure out is the encryption.
Thanks very much
Rod

And reasons like this is why linux will never be popular with anyone other than geeks. At least with windows you can go right out and plug the damn thing in and it works. maybe a driver install, but no driver compiling or kernel compiling.....
I'm fustrated with the whole process. I try to follow the instructions, but they don't ever seem to work. Everyone says to do something, but no one is willing to sit down and write out the whole exact process. This is what's needed for us linux idiots, but NOOOOOOOOOO! I have to sift through forum after forum on how to compile, where to get drivers out, how to install packages and I still can't get anything working!

I'm about to give up and stick with windows!
