Question Madwifi with atheros in laptop not working in debian with linux 2.6

I have a ibm thinkpad laptop that has atheros 802.11 card.
lspci gives '0000:02:02.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications, Inc. AR5211 802.11ab NIC (rev 01)
'
i followed the procedure given in http://www.marlow.dk/site.php/tech/madwifi

to install madwifi on my box which has debian sarge with 2.6 kernel
uname -r gives '2.6.8-2-386'

it got installed properly and when i did modprobe, i had ath_pci module in the list
ath_pci 67868 0
ath_rate_onoe 8072 1 ath_pci
wlan 125468 2 ath_pci,ath_rate_onoe
ath_hal 132432 1 ath_pci

but, i do not have any ath0 interface when i do ifconfig -a. and i am stuck now.
when i tried changing the eth0 to ath0 in all places in /etc/network/interfaces ... it did not work even after that.

this is my dmesg output
[snip]
ath_hal: no version for "struct_module" found: kernel tainted.
ath_hal: module license 'Proprietary' taints kernel.
ath_hal: 0.9.12.14 (AR5210, AR5211, AR5212)
wlan: 0.8.6.0 (EXPERIMENTAL)
ath_rate_onoe: 1.0
ath_pci: 0.9.6.0 (EXPERIMENTAL)
ACPI: PCI interrupt 0000:02:02.0[A] -> GSI 11 (level, low) -> IRQ 11
ath_attach: HAL ABI mismatch; driver expects 0x4112900, HAL reports 0x4093000
tg3: eth0: Link is up at 100 Mbps, full duplex.
tg3: eth0: Flow control is on for TX and on for RX.
eth0: no IPv6 routers present

plz take a look at the ath_attach line.. is that the problem?

i also added an alias for ath_pci as ath0 ... but to no avail ..

now, can some one figure out what the problem is?

One explanation might be that you are using the pre-1407 version of the madwifi-ng drivers. Does ifconfig -a list a device called "wifi0"? If so, try executing the following:
Code:
wlanconfig ath0 create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode sta
I would otherwise suggest trying one of the procedures described on the official madwifi page: Madwifi & Debian
