OK.... I am a complete Linux novice. I know little or nothing, but I am trying to broaden my technology skills and knowledge. I currently teach an A+ and Cisco class for High School students. I am trying to find projects that the kids can use to work with some of the older computers we have.... Pentium, 200MHz and PII 233Mhz variety machines. I found a stripped down Linux distribution that will allow you to use the machine as a router or with a Wireless NIC as an access point and would allow you to run NAT through the machine. (Smoothwall / IP Cop) My biggest problem is finding the drivers for the Wireless NIC. I have tried the Siemens (Dumb, because I thought that most cards have the drivers already compiled), I did a little research and saw that Linksys WMP11 had the drivers compiled, went and exchanged the NIC.... got the Linksys back and the chipset on the Linksys was version 2.7 which does not have the drivers. Went back again and got the D-Link, but the version has changed on the D-link and the drivers haven't been compiled there either.
Any suggestions of an off the shelf Wireless NIC I can buy to complete this project. I would like to actually build two of these machines, one for our tech lab and another in the Library for students to be able to use their wireless Laptops with.
Unfortuanately, the WPC11 is a PCMCIA card and I am looking for a PCI card that I can use in a desktop system to create a wireless accesspoint for all operating systems; Linux, Windows and Macintosh.
