Looking for router/wireless/modem "How-to"

Hello all,

I have a desktop running Debian, a new laptop running Ubuntu and my tech support now has other distractions!

I want to get rid of the existing Linksys ADSL modem, replace it with a Linksys router/wireless/modem and I'm looking for a "How-to" which starts here and ends there with a working WLAN without having to become a computer expert.

My problem is that the computers are just tools, not ends in themselves - and my senior moments are joining up... I've spent too long already trying to find what I need to know in a form that I understand.

Regards Ant

If you're looking to replace a Linksys modem (I actually did not know that they made strictly *DSL modems!) with a Linksys modem/wireless-router combo unit, it is actually going to be surprisingly easy.

All you need is your PPPoE user name and password (provided by your ISP)! Then, depending on which model of a modem/router combo you have it just becomes a task of finding the various options within the web-interface.

When you plug your new modem/router in, if it is a Linksys, chances are it will have a default address of 192.168.1.1 (default user name = "admin", default password = "admin").

Let me know if you run into any stumbling blocks!

PS. "...has other distractions" - *hee hee* - a newly-acquired significant other, I take it.

Looking for router/wireless/modem "How-to"

Hello Nick,

Your guess is exactly right, and Dad is well down his list of priorities now!

Another forum is recommending the Linksys WAG200G but it appears that may be obsolete so I've emailed the company to see what they say.

Whatever it is, it must be easy, foolprrof and preferably quick...

Regards Ant

Yup; whichever modem/router you decide to purchase, 99% of them ship with PPPoE, and DHCP IP-serving built in.

Superfluous note: every bit of functionality within a modem/router can be shut off (quite easily) so it can become nothing more than a glorified hub, but I don't think that's what you're going for.

Hello all,

I've now got this WAG54G2 up and running, in essentials anyway. Some refining still needed.

Thankyou for your help -

Regards Ant
