Thanks. I'll try once my laptop is wired to the router so when changing it won't close down my internet. I was on WPA before but then I saw a post that Ubuntu won't work on WPA so changed to WEP and it happened again.

It didn't work Baby Stuey. Same problem like before. :( Please please help me. I have Ubuntu 10.10 32Bit. Just got it this weekend.

I have dl'd the latest from ralink, it's not a tarball, how do I use this???

2010_1215_RT3572_Linux_STA_v2.5.0.0.DPO.bz2

.bz2 files are bzip2 archives and should open just like gzipped archives and tarballs, by double-clicking. If you're missing the library for some reason you can get them here: http://bzip.org/ or through your distro's package manager.

If you're into the command line, this is from my MacBook terminal, but should be identical on Linux...

I can decompress the bz2 file. But the problem is that it only gives me one file (2010_1215_RT3572_Linux_STA_v2.5.0.0.DPO) which is 4.1 MB. If I open the file with a text editor, the contents just repeat the file name. I would expect one main directory, with several sub-directories containing source code.

So, just for grins I :

tar -jxvf 2010_1215_RT3572_Linux_STA_v2.5.0.0.DPO.bz2

This created the directory and directories as expected, so I'm back to installing the drivers.

Sweet! I was just going to have a look to see what happens, but sounds like you solved your own problem. :) I have a feeling that file is similar to a .tar.gz file, except it's a .DPO.bz2, so if you pipe it through bzip2 to uncompress, you get the tape archive and then must untar it from there to get the individual files.

I still wasn't able to get the wireless going, but following the instructions here I am now on my desktop using the wireless USB.

The blue light isn't on, but at least I have a connection. Tomorrow I'll take it to work, where I will really be using it.

Yeah, that's exactly it... the -j (or -z) option in tar pipes the decompression through gzip/bzip2, so your one command can be broken into two:

$tar -jxvf 2010_1215_RT3572_Linux_STA_v2.5.0.0.DPO.bz2

is approximately equal to:

$bzip2 -dkv 2010_1215_RT3572_Linux_STA_v2.5.0.0.DPO.bz2
$tar -xvf 2010_1215_RT3572_Linux_STA_v2.5.0.0.DPO

Not that it's a big deal, any idea why the lights are not working?

Mine's a little flaky with the lights like that too. It usually doesn't work until the drivers are properly loaded, but if it's finding a network, connecting and working (even without the lights), I wouldn't push you luck! :P

I googled linux for information regarding RTMP and a plethora of sync.c file references
and some info regarding quote
"Otherwise will cause hidden SSID association failed. .....
Send an NULL data with turned PSM bit on to current associated AP before SCAN progress.
Now! i'm really out on a limb should I have re compile the driver with some modified
version of an included file.

Brand new to Linux.
Trying to follow your instructions, kind of confused. Mind you I have no idea how any of this works.

I'm doing this on my newly installed Fedora 14. I need to compile the driver. When I run

$tar -jxvf 2010_1215_RT3572_Linux_STA_v2.5.0.0.DPO.bz2, I am told it is not a directory. When I run the command without the bz2 at the end, like this: $tar -jxvf 2010_1215_RT3572_Linux_STA_v2.5.0.0.DPO I am told it is not a file or a directory.

When I run the command: make
It starts doing what I think it is supposed to do, but I am told

make[1]:gcc: Command not found

make[1]: Leaving directory '/home/Nick/Desktop/2010_1215_RT3572_Linux_STA_v2.5.0.0.DPO/tools'

I went to PackageKit and searched and found it gcc, clicked on it, and clicked Apply, nothing happened. Then I went to Filters > Installed >, when I filter by only installed it comes up so it must be installed, then I filter by only available and it does not come up. I then go to the command line and type: pkcon search name gcc

It says that it is installed; libgcc-4.5.1-4.fc14.i686
It also says Message: repo-metadata-download-failed: Could not contact source 'fedora', so it will be disabled
repo-metadata-download-failed: Could not contact source 'updates', so it will be disabled.

Okay so I can't contact them because there is no internet on this computer, of course...?
I'm totally lost I need gcc so I can compile this so I can get on the net, what am I not understanding?

Remember this is totally new to me.
