Kismet not working correctly on Zaurus 5000D

I have a zaurus 5000D and I have installed Kismet. I have it working to the point where it creates files but they are all empty. Kismet runs for less than 10 seconds and ends with a "Gathering packets.... Bus error. It creates files like "Kismet-May-19-2005-2.xml". But like I said the files are empty. I have modified the kismet.conf and the Kismet_ui.conf file so many times that I am running out of ideas. I know I should pick up something because I am with in the range of my wireless network.

The Zaurus is running embedix linux kernel 2.4.6.

rom version 1.12

I have installed Kismet_2005.01.R1_arm.ipk

I have looked through a lot of stuff and found some very useful information on this site but nothing specific to my problem

Does anyone have any information that may help me with this.

Two questions.

1. Which Rom are you running? Sharp or OZ based?

2. Where is it saving the files?

Kismet on Zaurus 5000D

It is the Sharp rom.

The files are saved on my sd card.

It appears that even though I get a message "can not connect to server" kismet is channel hopping.... at least I think thats what its doing.

After launching kismet gui from commandline with kismet_qt, I switched to the console and I see

message=lnxreq_wlansniff
enabled=true
channel=(this is changing rapidly through the range that is set up in the config file)
resultcode=success

This just repeats over and over until I click on the cannot connect to server message box ok button. .... and exit the gui.

I am guessing that just because the card is in rfmon mode and channel hopping does not necessarily mean its sniffing packets.

even with the above scenario I still get empty files...... as I said before files are created and I can directer them to be created where ever I choose. At the moment they are on my sd card.

Here is something I changed since I found some info on this site and others:

I created a network profile that has a static ip so that the card would not try to use dhcp. (kismet) as seen in the cardctr scheme in the script below.

also created a script
#! /bin/sh
cardctl scheme CardResume
cardctl scheme kismet &
/usr/bin/kismet_server
cardctl scheme default.

Also I went to the services file in /etc and set kismet 2501/tcp #kismet. I don't know if this is necessary but I think this basically says that kismet is running on port 2501 and using tcp.

I am seeing that there are lots of probable causes for error on configuring kismet.
There are also many solutions its just a matter of getting the one that fits my particular scenario.

any help would be much appreciated ...
