iwconfig settings won't "stick"

Hi,

I'm attempting to set up a wireless network at home using a Slackware 9.0 box as the router/gateway. I was having trouble finding a compatible wireless card, but after some in-depth reading on these boards I was finally able to get a Belkin up and running with the ADM8211 drivers.

The issue I'm having now is that I can see my wireless card as eth1 when I "iwconfig" but when I try and make a change to the settings (iwconfig eth1 essid "any") the change doesn't happen. The only thing I've been successful at is changing the Nickname. Am I overlooking something? Suggestions or insight appreciated.

Update: I'm now able to make some changes stick by using "iwconfig eth1 committ" although this has led to a few more questions. It doesn't always seem to work. Sometimes I have to issue the changes a few times before I see it happen. I was able to get it to accept Ad-Hoc and Managed as modes but so far it doesn't want to accept Master.

hey slipstream

i'm kinda new to wireless on linux as well, but i've been able to fix alot of my problems posting here. iwconfig doesnt save any of the settings anywhere, what i did to get my card online when I boot, was add those settings that i needed to my /etc/rc.d/rc.local file.

for me that it looks like:

iwconfig wlan0 essid Knutserver
iwconfig wlan0 channel 7
iwconfig wlan0 key F09AACAC50936C58A93xxxxxxx

then to bring the card up to where i can see it

ifconfig wlan0 up

and then to get an ip...

dhcpcd wlan0

I'm not very familiar with slackware, but i'm assuming the commands should pretty much be the same. this is a link to the post that i've been getting help at, what i just posted here is all there, plus some other stuff if that doesnt help
