iwconfig can't find wlan0

I had successfully installed the Realtek8180 drivers for linux on knoppix and other debians, but after hearing about ndiswrapper's support for the realtek drivers, I decided to try it out. I downloaded the source from CVS, then compiled it and pointed ndiswrapper to the driver. I then typed in "iwconfig wlan0 mode Managed", but then iwconfig told me that wlan0 didn't exist. My kernel has wireless lan compiled in. What is wrong ans what should I do?

perhaps the ndiswrapper doesn't call it wlan0. Try just typing iwconfig and it'll go through all your bound network devices and tell you if any of them support wireless extensions.

When i tried to configure the card using iwconfig using eth0 and lo (the only ones detected by iwconfig), it told me both times that the operation of mode Managed doesn't work on it. Is there a way to make it detect it? I even created an ifcfg-wlan0 script.
