@shinysco: yes this looks like smp. Strange, since I NEVER got ipw3945 to work with a smp kernel (not even on other distros).

For testing I have now installed Suse 10.2 Alpha4 on my laptop, which comes with a smp kermel by default. WLAN worked out of the box there (you have to install ipw3945d and ipw-firmware from the 10.2 addon CD), so I was quite pleased. If you are fed up with trial and error on 10.1, you may want to check this out.
