Installing BCM4306 drivers on Fedora Core 6

Hey guys,

I just installed Fedora Core 6 on my laptop and found out that it does not have support for my wireless card, the BCM4306. I am an absolute beginner to Linux so I have no idea what I am doing.

I've tried following several tutorials on installing the "infamous" BCM43xx drivers, but I can't seem to do it. The biggest problem is that my laptop has no way of connecting to the internet (which is why I need the driver), and it seems like in all those tutorials that it has to have internet.

If somebody would be so kind as to write a step-by-step (remember I am completely new to this) tutorial as to how this can be done, it would be much appreciated!

Thanks,
Casper H.

Use whatever machine you're currently using to access this board to download any files you need for the installation. Burn them to a CD/DVD. Put the CD/DVD in your laptop...

The bcm43xx module is part of the FC6 kernels, nothing to install. Start by checking if the module is already loaded, from the console or xterm session type something like;

/sbin/modprobe | grep bcm43

If yes then use the Network Manager to active and configure the wireless card.

Menu-->Applications-->System Settings-->Network

While not written for Fedora Core this should help;

Typing in that command gives me a "Usage" response. I think it is the "|" symbol? Trying without tells me that module "grep" is not found.

It'd be great if this could work without any installation.. thanks!

First, sorry my mistake I provided the wrong command.

Cut and paste the command below, the character '|' is the shifted '\' key.

cat /proc/modules | /bin/grep bcm43

One thing to keep in mind is that while the bcm43xx kernel module is part of many distributions, the firmware it needs to function is not. If you haven't created and installed firmware files with fwcutter, you need to before bcm43xx will function. I've got instructions on my linux site (link in sig) but you will need a CD or USB drive in order to copy the needed files to your Fedora system.

When I run that command I get three lines in return.. I'm not quite sure what they mean. When I try to activate my eth1 wireless controller, however, I get this:

SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory
Failed to bring up eth1.

I guess I'll have to get to work on acquiring that firmware...
I have a research paper to write first, though. I'll be back in a few hours..

All help is appreciated
