I can see wnets with kismet... but I cannot connect to my AP

Cisco 340 pcmcia
airo-linux drivers with kern 2.4.27
slackware 10
I turn on kismet and I can see my ap. I goto another console and type iwlist peers
and I can also see it there. So I know I have to get eth0 out of promisc in order to operate the card to connect to my ap. So I usually reboot or do that manually.

I then can no longer see my access point.

When I'm in PROMISC on eth0 It will fill in the SSID and I can see the MAC addy of the AP .. but I cannot obviously connect while in PROMISC.

So strange.
