How to associate with an other AP ?

I am interested in changing my association with one AP for an other one. Let me draw a picture...

I have two access points available to me one is my AP the other is my Neighbors. If I turn my laptop on in the bedroom I am on my local network, if I turn it on in the living room I am on my neighbors AP. We are friends, but I would like to be able to tell my laptop wich AP to associate with.

Thanks for the help...

Mr.Slappy

P.S. I am running Slackware 10 kernel 2.4 and using an IBM thinkpad w/ an Orinoco silver

In my rc.local, I tell it what AP to use:

iwconfig eth0 essid <my SSID>

It always picks out my AP, and kismet picks up about 9 APs just sitting in my living room! Of course, I put mine on a different channel than most. Almost all of them here are on channel 6, which is the default in several routers. You could try switching channels, and see if that helps.

Code:
In my rc.local, I tell it what AP to use:

iwconfig eth0 essid <my SSID>
Did not work. Still picked up the other AP. I did notice that it got an IP during boot from rc.M which I belive got it from rc.pcmcia. So do I need to edit rc.pcmcia?

Again thanks for the help
