Getting the Linksys WMP11 drivers

I have asked Linksys about releasing drivers for the WMP11, here is the reply:

Dear Valued Linksys Customer,

Thank you for contacting Linksys Technical Support.

I am sorry to inform you that Linksys doesn't manufacture drivers for Linux. Since the drivers are customized, the customers usually make one or download it somewhere to make it work. We have received reports that there is a downloadable driver for the WUSB11 series but none as of the moment for the WMP series. With regard to the website, we are still in the process of confirming the link as reported by customers.

If you have further questions, please contact us at (800) 326-7114 or send us an email at support@linksys.com so that we may further assist you. Please use this phone number given as reference for future support calls.

I still think that they will release drivers if we ask them. Please contact Linksys and ask. Perhaps if they see opensource is a big business oppertunity, they will think about releasing open source drivers. If you have any other ways you can think of to help try and persuade Linksys to release drivers, please post them here.

Not to rain on your consumer advocate parade, but there are Linux drivers for the WMP-11. Check the version number or do an lspci to get the chipset type. Look on the AbsoluteValue list for the driver you'll need.

It's pretty doubtful that Linksys (or most others, for that matter) would do much in the way of driver development on an 802.11B product for any O/S.

The only way to get drivers for the card is through ndiswrapper. And the results for me weren't good. I decided to try and ditch Windows and see if I could finally use Linux this time. The ndiswrapper driver wouldn't let me get speeds above 30 kbps. I am no Linux ace, so I can't say what was causing the problem, but it was still unusable, and I was forced to go back to Windows. It's just that its frustrating to not be able to have freedom of choice regarding operating systems without sacrificing my only means of an Internet connection, and being forced to use an OS that is in my opinion very crappy.

Do you have the v2.7 of the card or the "normal" WMP11. I think there's some problem in your setup if you get only low speeds. Which version of ndiswrapper did you try?

I didn't remember what version of ndisewrapper I was using. I have a WMP11 v4 with the InProComm chipset. But I might be able to get the specifications. Heres the reply I got:

Dear Valued Linksys Customer,

Thank you for contacting Linksys Technical Support.

We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you.

Maybe you can check this link for Linux drivers:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...04/12/4/121858

I need to know the product specs that you actually need-- if you can specify the category that you need, I would gladly provide you with such info.

Would I ask for the WMP11 v4 specifications, or something else, like the chipset specifications.

Update: I asked for the specifications for the WMP11 v4, specifically regarding the chipset. I also asked if they could get InProComm to try and cooperate with this effort. I might actually be making progress, we will just have to wait and see. I'm waiting for a reply now.

That link says you can use ndsiwrapper and have to load all three of the inf files and then it's supposed to work.

I'm probably going to try and get ndiswrapper to work next weekend. I was having problems, but it might just have been FC 3. I will try using Debian and see if I can get better results.
