Getting MEPIS to remember wireless settings at boot

Hi-
I'm using ndiswrapper to configure a Broadcom chipset PCI card on MEPIS. All is working fine, but I don't seem to be able to get it to remember the settings at boot time. Instead I have to open up a console and run "iwconfig wlan0 essid <ssid> key <wep>" then "dhclient wlan0" to get an IP leased.
Modifying /etc/network/interfaces fails. It says not to use it to configure wireless settings if using MEPIS beyond 2.6.15 kernel, mine is 2.6.15-26-386. I also tried an /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0 file with a corresponding keys-wlan0 with no success (perhaps that applies to a different distro?)
It's probably something simple but I'm not getting anywhere with it. Any ideas?

I've always found the best thing to do is to write a little bash script with all the configuration settings and either have that run at boot or run it manually. If you've got a few networks you usually connect to, you might check out using wpa_supplicant. It can handle both WPA and WEP encryption and the config file can hold the configurations for multiple networks. You do have to launch it at boot, but that is a fairly trivial problem to solve.

Thanks Hangdog, you're very helpful. I'll look into getting a script to run at startup, I only have the one network.
