Unhappy Gentoo linux and wireless internet problems

I am running a version of gentoo on my laptop and am having trouble getting my wireless internet to work. It has worked in the past but we have had troubles with comcast, and that's when it got messed up. The comcast is working for everyone else in the house except mine. Typically to get it to work I open a terminal and sign in as the super user, then type " iwconfig eth1 essid britney-smirnoff" (the name of our access point). It is secured, but I have the password. After this, I can type in iwconfig again and view the access point which looks like it should be working (it shows the address and such). I recall in the past someone telling me to then type in "something off" only I can't remember what the something is. If anyone could please help me figure out how to get the wireless working again that would be much appreciated.
